Please consider the following:
As may already know, Havanese are very friendly and typically make friends with any guests you may have at your home. However, they do not do well if left alone for extended periods of time. As far as personality goes, they have been described as having the personality of a lab or golden retriever (loyal, loving, playful) in a nice small toy-dog sized package.
Adopting a new dog into your home is an exciting experience! Before bringing home your new puppy, it is recommended that you go through and make sure that any enticing hazards - such as poisonous plants or electrical cords are out of the way (a list of some plants poisonous to dogs can be found at: http://www.dogpack.com/health/poisonplants.htm).
Also, it's important to have an idea of where a new puppy will spend most of his or her time with you in your home. Will he sleep in a crate at night? (recommended for house training) Will he have free run of the house during supervised hours or will baby gates be used to keep him on easily cleaned hard surfaces until he's housebroken? How will you and your family handle accidents/ discipline? These kinds of questions are important to plan and think about before hand to ensure proper socialization and training of your new pet.
Some lines of Havanese are prone to Juvenile Cataracts. We've been involved with this breed for about 15 years. All of our foundation stock dogs were CERF tested for juvenile cataracts. We keep in contact with all of our adoptive families and have never had a case of juvenile cataracts in our lines in the past 15 years. Therefore, if you adopt a dog from us, you can be reasonably certain that this will not be an issue.
Havanese can also be prone to loose and luxating patellas. This, unfortunately, can occur as a result of being on hard ground and jumping up and down from couches to hard surfaces.
A'achera Havanese are fed Wysong dog food. We recommend feeding a human-quality pet food such as Wysong. Havanese are prone to food allergies, and many supposedly "premium" pet foods contain nastiness that you would rather not know about. (If you are curious, however, feel free to google the subject.) You can find a local distributor at www.wysong.net
