House Training
There are many different methods for housetraining your dog. One of the most popular methods is Crate training, as it works for most dogs, and allows owners to have a bit more freedom than some other methods.
How to crate train your Havanese:
1) Consistency is key. Feed your new Havanese at consistent times each day, and expect to take them outside within 30 minutes to 1 hour of feeding. Take them out a minimum of 3 or 4 times each day, especially for puppies and older dogs as they have the most trouble holding it. Remember to take them out first thing in the morning when you both wake up, and before bed to minimize night time accidents.
2) Withhold food and water at least 3 hours before your last 'outside' time at night, to keep them from having to go in the middle of the night.
3) Key Phrase. Say your phrase 2 or 3 times when you have your Havanese outside where you want him or her to relieve himself or herself, and only say it when you want them to go, so as not to confuse them. Choose something along the lines of 'outside' or 'hurry up guys' or 'do your thing' or 'lets go'. Keep it to 4 syllables or less so that they understand it.
4) Positive reinforcement is key! When your Havanese does her thing outside, be sure to lavish her with praise, attention, love, and possibly even a small treat. This cannot be emphasized enough. Havanese are especially social creatures and love attention, and most will do something again if they know that they will get rewarded for it.
5) Avoid Intimidation. Do not, DO NOT yell, hit, smack, spank, kick or otherwise punish your dog for an accident that was made when you were not around. This only leads to such behavioral challenges as submissive urination, and sometimes dogs who are yelled at never get housebroken. If you do catch your dog in the act in an inappropriate place, say 'No' firmly, but do not yell or hit, and remove him to the place you want him to eliminate. Then, if he or she does finish relieving himself in the proper place, then be sure to praise, give attention, and reward him for doing the right thing.
For more help, there are many good sites on the internet, and excellent books on the subject of training. Have patience, and be persistent. Make sure all members of the household use the same training commands and follow the same rules, and your furry friend will be better behaved. Most of all, have fun!
